چکیده

Eight PbWO4 crystals produced for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at LHC have been irradiated in a 20 GeV/c proton beam up to fluences of 5.4 × 10 p/cm. The damage recovery in these crystals, stored in the dark at room temperature, has been followed for over a year. Comparative irradiations with Co photons have been performed on seven other crystals using a dose rate of 1 kGy/h. The issue whether hadrons cause a specific damage to the scintillation mechanism has been studied through light output measurements on the irradiated crystals using cosmic rays. The correlation between light output changes and light transmission changes is measured to be the same for proton-irradiated crystals and for γ-irradiated crystals. Thus, within the precision of the measurements and for the explored range of proton fluences, no additional, hadron-specific damage to the scintillation mechanism is observed. Comparison between high-energy proton and charged pion induced damage in PbWO4 calorimeter crystals

A PbWO4 crystal produced for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at the LHC was cut into three equal-length sections. The central one was irradiated with 290 MeV/c positive pions up to a fluence of (5.67± 0.46)× 10 cm, while the other two were exposed to a 24 GeV/c proton fluence of (1.17 ± 0.11) × 10 cm. The damage recovery in these crystals, stored in the dark at room temper...

The CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter Readout

CMS is a general-purpose detector designed for use in the large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN. The electromagnetic calorimeter will play an important role in electron and photon energy measurements. The benchmark process to evaluate and optimize its performance is H −→ γγ in the intermediate mass range (90 < mH < 150 GeV). For this purpose, each element of the readout chain has to be optimized....

Radiation hardness qualification of PbWO4 scintillation crystals for the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

Ensuring the radiation hardness of PbWO4 crystals was one of the main priorities during the construction of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at CERN. The production on an industrial scale of radiation hard crystals and their certification over a period of several years represented a difficult challenge both for CMS and for the crystal suppliers. The present article reviews ...

A Study on Radiation Damage in BGO and PWO-II Crystals

We report in this paper an investigation on radiation damage in 20 cm long BGO crystals produced at SIC as well as 20 cm long PWO-II crystals produced at BTCP for the proposed Panda experiment at GSI. The optical and scintillation properties of BGO and PWOII crystals, such as transmittance, light output and light response uniformity, were measured before and after γ-ray irradiations at differen...
